Following the devastating impacts of cyclone Thane, Maheshvari became a community leader. She has learned to read satellite information on weather conditions that she broadcasts daily to ensure the safety of struggling fisherman in her coastal community of Veerampattinam, India.

“We get the satellite information from the Village Knowledge Center. Once we get the ocean status we announce it. We announce that the waves will be up to a certain point, so go carefully. If the waves are over the danger mark, we tell them not to go. We also tell them where they can get a good catch. So they are assured of some income.”
